The Power of Your Name
Calling me by name is not an extraordinary request. The countless times I have been called the name of another Black person is too many to recall. I often brushed it off, although I wanted to scream: Wrong Black person! The reason this dug into my being so deeply is that the meaning of my name, Osatohanmwen, means God have mercy on me. God surely has granted me many mercies indeed! Names are not provided lightly, our ancestors named us before we even presented ourselves to the world in our human forms. The power in your name is tantamount to your being. Do you know the power of your name? Do you understand the power that is you? Have you ever had the discussion with your people about why they named you what they named you? The audacity of anyone to refer to you as someone different because they are unable to recognize the Shine that is you! Black Woman, there is no one on this Earth that is like you. As I shout your name, take it as a calling to leap into your greatness!
Definitions of Pretzeling and Shine
Pretzeling means to bend, twist, and shape yourself into a form that satisfies other people’s needs and wants. When you pretzel, your being is shaped by external forces, oft-times driven by “rewards” provided to you when you pretzel (certain jobs, relationships, and credentials). To pretzel means to set your life up so it is pleasing to everyone, except you. This is particularly evident with Black Women as we are conditioned from the beginning to pretzel in order to fit White America’s standards of “excellence” and beauty. Purposely selecting not to pretzel means censure, sanction, and punishment from the myriad of external forces.
Shine means to bring your whole self to the table. Shine here should not be confused with the Instagram shine of filters, make-up, and hair. Shine is you and the complete you. In order to Shine, you must unpretzel, literally stand up straight and show yourself to the world regardless of the punishment.
